In order to become an explorer there are minimum qualifications that must be met and maintained by the individual.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Applicants must meet the following requirements:
• Between the ages of 14 1/2 to 20 (application may be made at age 14, if the applicant has completed the eighth grade.)
• Have a minimum 2.0 GPA, and be in good standing with school administrators.
• Be free from any serious physical defects.
• Have no criminal convictions.

Selection Process:

All applicants must attend three meetings at their desired division. The applicant may submit an application following the third meeting. All applicants must pass an oral interview and a background investigation prior to being accepted to the status of probationary sheriff explorer. Applicants must have written parent approval, and at least one parent must attend one meeting to meet the advisor and observe the operation of the post.

Expectations:

Once accepted into the post, explorers must complete the following to maintain their position:

• Must graduate from the basic explorer academy within one year of acceptance.
• Must attend no less than two meetings in any four week period.
• Must donate a minimum of five service hours per month.
• Must remain in good standing with advisors and department.
