Today we remember a fallen hero – OCSD Sergeant Ira G. Essoe

On November 6, 1980, while working his shift in the Warrant Detail, Investigator Essoe and his partner drove to a local mall to collect bail on a warrant. As they looked for a place to park their unmarked car, the investigators saw three men attempting to steal a car. The men all were parolees. Investigator Essoe was fired upon as he attempted to make contact with the men. The shot paralyzed Essoe from the chest down. Following the shooting, Essoe was promoted to the rank of sergeant.

Even after his life-threatening injuries, Sergeant Essoe continued to give back to the department. Essoe remained paralyzed and struggled to survive through many medical problems directly related to the shooting. On February 4 2010, Retired Sergeant Ira Essoe succumbed to his injuries. The coroner ruled his death a homicide – “delayed complications from remote gunshot wounds.”

Today we remember a fallen hero – OCSD Deputy Robert Schultz

On April 21, 1958, Deputy Robert Schultz was shot and killed after he and his partner stopped an old school bus being driven by a mentally disturbed man.

The man's family was riding in the bus and had displayed signs for help in the windows. The deputies stopped the bus near Dana Point and started getting the family off of the bus. As they did so, the man ordered his 11-year-old son to shoot the deputies and the boy opened fire with a .22 caliber rifle. Deputy Shultz was struck by a round and killed, and his partner was wounded.

News ImageToday we remember a fallen hero, Deputy Darryn L. Robins.

Deputy Robins was a seven-year veteran of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department working In the Central Jail and then on patrol in the city of Lake Forest.

While in Lake Forest he took the opportunity to work directly with youth, speaking at the elementary schools and frequently performing a rap version of "Officer Friendly". The children called him Deputy "Rappin" Robins. Darryn also went to many intermediate schools, where he developed a presentation to encourage young boys and girls to avoid gangs.

Deputy Robins' untimely and tragic death in December 1993 during an on-duty training mishap left the entire Sheriff’s Department and the community with a deep sense of loss and grief. Because of the record he established in his relatively short law enforcement career, because he always set his standards high and because he epitomized what a professional law enforcement officer should be, the Department honored his memory by presenting the first Sheriff's Memorial Medal to Deputy Robins' family.

Veterans Day 2014

News Image

Each November 11th we pause to honor the veterans of our armed forces. At Bunker Hill and Gettysburg, at Normandy and Iwo Jima, at Inchon and the Gulf of Tonkin, at Tora Bora and Bagdad, and on countless other battlefields, ordinary Americans were willing to sacrifice their lives so that our liberty may endure. To this day our country is fortunate to have men and women who follow in the brave tradition of past veterans and answer the call of military service.

A veteran’s service to country often does not end with the conclusion of their military career. Many and most go on to continue to serve their communities. The Orange County Sheriff’s Department is proud to have a number of military veterans as part of our ranks. Both in sworn and professional staff capacities, these veterans bring their skill, bravery and character to the work they do on behalf of the Department’s public safety mission.

Founding Father Patrick Henry warned that “those who expect to reap the blessings of freedom must undertake to support it.” Thank you to all the veterans who have undertaken the support of our precious freedoms. Happy Veterans Day!
