The Orange County Sheriff’s Department’s Marine Operations Bureau has a longstanding tradition. When you transfer to harbor patrol, you arrive by land, but when you transfer out, promote, or retire you leave by sea. That tradition remained alive and well when newly promoted Sergeant Dennis Breckner and retiring Harbormaster Lieutenant Tom Slayton received their walking (or swimming) papers.
Under the supervision of newly appointed Harbormaster Lieutenant Mike Jansen and a crowd of cheering onlookers, Breckner and Slayton were seized by their co-workers and unceremoniously flung into the frigid 56-degree waters of Newport Harbor.
Next week, look for a feature on newly appointed Harbormaster Lt. Jansen.
