Orange County Sheriff’s deputies from Mission Viejo Police Services teamed up with Target to bring holiday cheer to 15 local students between the 3rd and 8th grades. These children were selected by school administration as well as by the Sheriff’s School Resource Officers (SRO’s) for showing good character, decision making skills, and academics despite dealing with difficult life circumstances. Thanks to a “Heroes & Helpers” grant from Target and additional individual donations from city and police services staff, $100 Target gift cards were disbursed to each student. Deputies then assisted each child in shopping for themselves and others. As the shopping came to a close, volunteer Target employees and city staff then helped each child wrap all of the gifts to take home. Beyond providing monetary assistance, the “Heroes & Helpers” program provides law enforcement with a unique opportunity to reward, reinforce and mentor students who are making positive decisions despite difficult life situations.
