OCSD’s K-9 program is an essential part of the Sheriff’s Department. Currently eight deputies and their canine partners provide coverage in the County, reducing the manpower needed to search in large buildings and open space by over 50%.
The importance of the K-9 Unit was proven once again on the night of Saturday, May 31st when a Laguna Hills resident called OCSD after discovering a suspected burglar who claimed to have a gun in their home. The suspect fled and was discovered by a helicopter hiding in brush. After the man failed to come out of hiding a K-9, Sando, was sent in. Thanks to Sando and his partner Deputy Bill Burk the suspect was captured and officers took him into custody.
