OCSD's DET and Duke Catch Suspect in Vehicle Thefts
The OCSD's Directed Enforcement Team (DET) and Air Support Unit recently worked together to stop a spree of vehicle thefts at Salt Creek Beach (SCB) in Dana Point. Wallets and cell phones were being taken from parked vehicles and the stolen credit cards then used to purchase nearly $40,000 worth of gift cards from Target stores. It is believed the gift cards would then immediately be used to purchase electronic devices which were sold for cash.
Because of the high volume of thefts, deputies with DET set up surveillance in the SCB parking lot. On June 18th DET deputies observed the suspect in the passenger seat of a vehicle driven by an unidentified male. Surveillance ensued and DET and Duke, the OCSD helicopter, observed the suspects committing additional thefts from vehicles and fraudulent card use. The suspects were arrested and booked at the Orange County Jail.
The DA’s office filed 26 felony counts and one additional misdemeanor count on both suspects. They are currently in custody and ineligible for bail. Great job by our DET and Air Support units!
